Anybody ever heard of this?

Okay,

It seems like a good idea...

but, isn't that what the drunk (in the buff) cowboy said about the cactus patch?

I'm trying to figure out a way to keep that electronic key out of my pfd and out from under my back bumper. Anybody heard of this/seen one used?  Before I drop 70 for it?

Just curious...

Do you already have a trailer hitch on the Ru?  If not, that is going to be a pretty good chunk of change.

Thanks, guys,

Don't already have a hitch, but had been looking for one (have a trailer).

Drybag not dry enough.  Ziplock in drybag is what I've heard.  For some reason, it still seems cumbersome to me.

The safe has a cover for the combination lock.  I guess I just wondered how the tumblers would hold up to dirt, grime, water, etc...

All advice appreciated :-D

Santha,
If I were you, I would look into getting a copy of the key made.  Just a regular key without the electronic crap on it.

Then you lock your fancy key in your Ru  and put your key copy in your PFD and use the copy  to unlock the door.  Should not need the fancey electronics to get the door unlocked.

Now where you can get a cheap key made, I do not know, but I am sure it can be done.

I really like the idea of getting a cheap key made--and locking the electronic key in the car.  Have to find out if the electronics also work in tandum with the door alarm.

Oh, and thanks mhoward for naming my car the Ru...

been wonderin what to call it.

Yo Sammie, you get a new sled?
P.S. My vehicle will not let me lock the electronic key inside.

I average close to 8,000 a month. :-o

Something you might want to look into is a keyless entry key pad. It mounts somewhere inconspicuous on yourcar/truck. The keypad has 5 button (1/2, 3/4, 5/6, ect) that you program your own combintaion into that will unlock the doors. I'm not sureif youcan find one for your specific car,  but it might be wrth looking into. They only run about $70 and mount easily.

I CAN lock my keys inside my car

Thanks for the advice, Ben. Have to look into that one.  Right now the "normal" key option looks to be the best (although the price of making that key may dictate other options).

Thanks, guys,
Santha

key + duct tape + fenderwell of your choice = not 70 bucks

I have a regular key that opens my doors but I always thought of what would happen if somehow I lost it on the river.  It seems like a good idea to leave a key at the car.  I usually leave mine in the gas cap door or under the bumper, but don't let another boater see you do this because they may re-hide your key from you just for fun.

Oh and if someone wants to steal your car or something out of it they usually don't use keys.
Its also a good idea to hide your valuables, wallet, phones, ect
You've got a better chance of having your vehicle broken into or stolen here in Memphis than most of the places we paddle.

(P.S. Im not trying to be a smart A$$ but the real thieves are the ones that want you to spend $$$ on some useless outside key storage for your vehicle.

In defense of the "useless" outside key storage:

1) I haven't carried a drybag on the river in probably 8 years. Hate carrying crap in my boat.
2) On rainy days fender wells, bumpers, etc. can get caked with mud.
3) Need electronic key to set car alarm.

So what's the alternative?

Mike,

I don't have the answers to all your questions; however, I do know that this morning when I "locked" my keys in my car (I put them on the seat and then hit the locks on the door and shut it up) my security light was blinking---so I'm assuming it set the alarm (but you know what they say about assuming anything ).

I'm thinking I'm going to get a non-electronic copy (if it can be done) and fasten it to my pfd.  Still don't know if the non-electronic copy will turn off the alarm.  I know the thing can't be cranked without the electric key (some kind of immobilizer).

It should prove an interesting experiment!  Wow, I totally have to get a life...
