JCC Roll Class
« on: November 02, 2009, 05:32:23 PM »
Thanks to Jason we now have a new place for roll classes.  They will be held at the Jewish Community Center located at 6560 Poplar Ave Wednesday nights from 7-9pm.  The cost will be $10 per session.

Parking is available just by the gate you will enter.  There is a chain link fence that has a gate on it that you will walk through and then go in the door to the pool.  Once you get your boat in the pool you will then walk down the hall to the front desk and pay your $10 to the person at the desk.  There are changing rooms there at the pool.

This map pretty much shows you what you need to know about parking and bringing your boat in.

There are not any boats for new people so we will have to bring gear for them to use, so if you are new and don't have any gear please let us know so we can be prepared for you.

Once again a big thanks to Jason for arranging this.

excellent! as they would say at JCC, "kol hakavod l'Jason" (it's high praise) and to everyone who plans on instructing/assisting. I'm absolutely looking forward to having a place to practice where someone can point out the errors of my ways.

thanks to all for working this out

Eddie, nose plugs would be good.

I don't think I have ever tried to roll a Rush.  Typically the rec style kayaks are much harder to roll than a whitewater boat, but we can try it.

Holy cow.  Jason, you DA MAN!

And thanks again to mhoward for providing insightful instruction (do I get a discount if I already have KYFHD tattooed on the inside of my eyelids?)

I'll be there.  Trail Monkey, I can bring my fusion.  She's an easy boat to roll.

Hip, hip, HOORAY!!!!

i'm excited to get roll practice going again.  big thanks to michael for taking the lead on this.  let's make a good first impression at the jcc (i.e. clean those boats and be courteous to the lap swimmers).

as far as drop off and parking.  the jcc is on the corner of aaron brenner and poplar.  to drop off your boat:  if you are headed east on poplar you will pass through the light at aaron brenner and make your first left immediately past the jcc onto a private drive (very easy to miss).  go straight a few hundred feet until you see a chain link fence on your left.  leave your boat and gear on the sidewalk next to the fence.  make sure to leave enough room on the road for other cars and on the sidewalk for pedestrians b/c there is retirement home at the end of the drive.  after that, head back to poplar, make a right on poplar, a right on aaron brenner, and a right into the jcc's parking lot.  tell the security guard at the front door that you are there for the roll class.  make sure to pay and sign the waiver at the front desk.  from there head up the stairs to the pool.  we may need to make a few changes after a class or two, so stay posted.
