2010 Arkansas Kayak & Canoe Race
Arkansas Canoe and Kayak Race Start 2009Arkansas Canoe and Kayak Race Start 2009
The 2010 Arkansas River
Canoe and Kayak Race will be June 5, 2010.
It's time to pull that boat out and dust off your vest and paddle. Warmer weather is coming and so is the Arkansas River Canoe & Kayak Race. This fast 6.5 mile down river race is one of the most senic races in the country. The race starts at Little Rock's Murray Park, passes North Little Rock's Emerald Park cliffs on your left with the State Capital and downtown Little Rock on your right. You will paddle under 5 bridges and finish on the North Little Rock side at the Arkansas Boathouse Rowing club.
The great thing about this race is you can be a world class racer or just want to have some fun and take in the sights. Bring your friends and family see some of the fastest racers in the south and some of the slowest.
Awards will be given to the top 3 racers of each class.

Martha and I are registered to race. We're leaving early Saturday morning. I hope we get a good Memphis contingent there.
The results of last weekend's race on the North Fork of the White in Missouri are now posted here:

I did three races in two days, highlighted by an appearance in C-2 with Mike Herbert. It was an adventure...

I guess I could order a tornado to cool things off a bit.

Randy and I will be racing as well. Driving early on Saturday. Thinking of 5:30 a.m. departure. Think that this will allow enough time or should we plan a little earlier? Sounds like the sun will be shining for sure! I look forward to seeing you, Martha and other Memphians there.

5:30 is probably early enough--that would get you to Little Rock between 7:30 and 8:00. Maybe leave a little earlier if you want to run your shuttle before the race. I need to look at the map and make sure I know how to get to Murray Park.

Yes I did not think about pre race shuttle. Do you want to team on the shuttle or do you have prior arrangements?

The event went off without a hitch yesterday. The course was all downstream from Murray Park to the I-30 bridge.
The race was exceptionally fast and exciting, thanks largely to the attendance of a group of Olympic and National Team hopefuls who are currently training in Oklahoma City. I'm happy to say that our friend Mike Herbert can still hold his own against some of these young studs, as he pulled out the victory. In so many races I've been a distant second to Mike, but yesterday that distance between us was filled in by four guys and two girls from the OKC training center. Eighth place is my worst ever for this race, but the upside is that I was pushed to a much faster time than I would have otherwise clocked.
Thanks to Phil and his helpers for a great event. I expect they'll have the results up soon at
www.paddlearkansas.com
. You'll certainly want to check and see how our heroic Memphians did--people like Jason Salomon, Rob Humphreys, Linda Weghorst, Fred Hatler, Sonny Salomon, Eddie (don't know his last name), Randy Weghorst, and, of course, my wife Martha.
The race was only part of an eventful trip for me. This photo sort of says it all about the rest of my day.

It was a great race in every way. Thanks to Phil and the crew for making it so smooth! Thanks Elmore for the report you shared! I had only seen the front of the car and am so sorry to see the damage done. Kudos to you and Martha for carrying on in light of that challenge. Congrats to Martha on the Gold and the Weghorsts would like to personally bestow a second gold for the awesome baklava! It is wonderful to be part of the Memphis paddlers community!

I just want to thank the Memphis Mafia for there strong showing. Elmore was right it was fun to watch the young guns out there and I think they thought they they would walk away with gold, but Mike Herbert is still the man.
I was like Elmore it was humbling to get beat by 3 girls and a 14 yr old boy, but I had fun any way.
I think things went good, I wish some of the other race directors could have been there to support all the races in the area.
Joe did call to say he was out of state.

Kudos to Phil...great race, big fun. I have wanted to do this every year, but this was my first. I hope to return. That was the first time that I have paddled the Thunderbolt X in an actual race. I was way ahead of most of the boats, but in my class, I was so far behind, I thought I was first!
I enjoyed finally racing with the big boys.
Vincent..good and bad news. First the good news: you're not really going to miss Calico Rock. The bad news: It's been cancelled.
Linda, if your Memphis Mafia picture came out, please post. I saw the guy take 2 pictures with my camera and it flashed; but when I went to view the pics, that picture is not there. I guess that's what comes of letting other people operate your machinery.
Well, thanks to Linda here's the Memphis gang:
