Accessing the Wolf River
« on: May 27, 2010, 03:42:10 PM »
Can anyone explain where, exactly, one can put in on the Wolf River at Germantown Parkway? I've seen it listed as a 1-2 hour float from Germantown Pky to Shelby Farms, but I can't figure out where to put the boat in the river. On the Shelby Farms side of the bridge? On the Chik-fil-a side of the bridge?

Help!!

Thanks.

it is pretty rough shape, but i believe the best access at gtown is still right under the power lines on the the nw corner of the bridge/river intersec.  i haven't tried it in awhile, but last i did there was a lot of mud to deal with.  access is better at walnut grove, but you will still get your feet muddy.  it's about a 1 hr float from bridge to bridge.

UNless it has changed in the last 10 days or so there is no real remotely easy way to get on the Wolf at Germantown. The spot we used is very overgrown and you pretty much have to know the exact spot or the water has to be very high. Your best bet, if you want to do this section is to put on at Houston Levee Bridge. Houston Levee to Germantown Bridge 5.5 miles and then 3.75 to Walnut Grove.
And as far as a landing being rebuilt at Germantown that is 2-3 years away most likely.
Some folks are actually putting on from behind Chick-Filet off the Greenway; about 50-70 yds up river there is a Sandbarr that is there unless the water is up high.

I actually just put in by Chik fil E last week.  Just climbed down the rocks right under the bridge.  Looked like the "main" entry to the NW of the brigde might have been blocked by a fallen tree, there was one other area there with a very steep, 8 foot trail that might be doable.

Thanks for the advice. It is sad that it's not easy to reach the water there. I could float that in the evenings after work :-(

Just a little FYI here.  I discussed this with Keith Kirkland (Wolf River Conservancy) in regards to possible Eagle Scout projects last Sunday.

There is a scheduled project to make a put in here by the Army Corps of Engineers.  According to Keith it was scheduled to start about now.  He was going to call the Corps just to check and see what the scheduling would be for this project.  So, it's coming!
