Mississippi State Games June 19

June 19
State Games of Mississippi
Pass Christian, Mississippi (10 kilometers)
http://www.stategamesofms.org/site1/?q=node/139

Martha and I mailed in our registration today.  Last I heard the oil had not reached Pass Christian yet.  They do have a backup site on the nearby Wolf River if the oil becomes a problem.
Those of you on Face Book can join their group page to get updates on the oil and other issues.  Their page is called "Mississippi State Games Kayak and Canoe Race."

Good luck to you and Martha at the MS State Games.  I hope travels are safe and the water will be clear and good for the race.

Apparently the backup site is not as solid as I'd thought.  The race organizers posted the following on Face Book today:

With the possibility of the BP oil arriving here, we have been working hard to find a backup location. There are many beautiful areas to have a race, but staging a "race" would be impossible with the small fishing boats and lack of logistics/bathrooms. If for some reason oil hits Pass Christian next week, and we are forced to not have the race (everyone's safety is number 1), those that have preregistered will be refunded by the main office.  For those that come into town and want to kayak, I suggest we all go to the area on the Wolf river and Bay and have a free large group paddle. There is a 12 mile course I have that is beautiful and a great place to kayak. It is 3 miles from the beach race site.  This course was going to be a backup but it would be impossible to get the fisherman not to use the boat launch for several hours on Saturday morning. We could use it for launching and going on a 20+ group kayak tour. The cost would be nothing.  The water is calm and tippy boats would be okay.  Just a thought.

I just registered for this race.  Going to keep my fingers cross for it.

Hope to see you there.

Elmore, are you modest...even shy?   8-)

You neglected to say you won the thing!

Okay, I did.  But so what?  All kinds of people win all kinds of races all the time.
The real story is this: three Memphians, three gold medals.  Martha won the ladies' fast-touring-boat class, while Santha won her class in the two-mile race.  Unfortunately, Santha's name was left off the results for some reason.  But she's got the medal to prove it.
On top of that, Santha put Martha and me up at her parents' farm north of Hattiesburg that evening.  It's a lovely place, and we went to a place with some good catfish for supper.
     Pretty good trip, all told.

Elmore is too kind (and WAY too awesome).

I was proudest, not of the medal, but of the last stretch of the race when a 70 year old former marine/cop tried to pass me and I made him work for it.  We were paddling like crazy and it was fun. It was really hot on the return of the lap and the camel back Martha loaned me really kept my spirits up.  There were beautiful orange jelly fish and pelicans on the course.  And, best of all, my dad volunteered to be my "pit crew" for the race and helped me.  It's the first real event he's attended with me and the time with him was incredibly dear.

What's really cool is that there's such a great community of boaters.  Martha and Elmore work every race to represent our section of the community in a very positive way.

And remember, the only whitewater river in Mississippi is only twenty minutes from the farm.  We could put up a whole mess of boaters next year and run the Okatoma (class I++, baby!) the next day.

I'll contact them about the results; I really want to see my time.  Thanks for the heads up  :-)

There is now a more readable version of the results posted here:

http://holmeswoodwork.com/RaceResults.html

Based on a picture I took of her approaching the finish, I figure Santha was no more than three seconds behind the old guy.  So I estimated her time accordingly.
