I had to leave before the meeting was over, but the session mostly involved Sherry, an employee of the town of Hernando who is planning the event, picking our brains for ideas of what makes a successful canoe and kayak race.
I don't think anything is set in stone yet, but the likely date of the race appears to be Saturday, September 25, so pencil that onto your calendar.  My understanding is that the course will be on Arkabutla Lake near the mouth of the Coldwater, possibly including some of the Coldwater.  Mike is trying to find out what the lake level will be, as that will have an impact on the choice of course.
Come see the best paddling page on the whole entire Internet.  It's called--what else?--The Paddling Page.  Visit http://www.holmeswoodwork.com/PaddlingPage.html.

Thanks Elmore.
As Elmore stated in the previous post, he, myself, and Vincent met with Shelly Johnstone with the city of Hernando. We discussed race priorities and the simple dynamics of racing and briefly discussed what all needs to be done. It was a very basic meeting but I think we pointed Shelly in the right direction.

Thank you Elmore and Vincent, it wouldn't have been much of a meeting without you guys.

Thanks for arranging this Mike. it does seem to be a promising event. I think it is great that a city the size of Hernando is moving in this direction [ for those who run there is a 10K run in the midst of this planning; not the same weekend but the weekend before I believe].  As Elmore said pencil in this as something to do.
Peace vincent/shamen

Sounds like fun - I've penciled in September 25 if that ends up final.

This is interesting ... this post is the first that I've heard about this race.

My business and my home are in Hernando, so I definitely have a "home town interest" in this.

If there is anything that I can do to help, just let me know.

Additionally, there is a website dedicated to paddling on the Coldwater River.  Although the membership on that site is slim, the crowd that visits it frequents the Coldwater River. That website would probably be a good spot to generate some interest and assistance with this race.  The address is http://coldwatertrail.org/
