The most recent issue of Sea Kayaker/August has an good article on winter paddling on the MR.
In every issue there is an article on boater safety and it is the 1st article I read; then I read the letters that respond to previous safety articles. These are not articles about safety theory but actual events that took place from people that were actually involved in the event. The article gives a very accurate description of the event and everything that happened. Then there is an evaluation of what went right, what went wrong, what could have been done different in preparation and during the event and what was learned.
This most recent article by Randy Morgart (Missouri whitewater & long boat paddler... anyone know him) describes a solo winter/February paddle on the MR in Missouri in which he flipped and things did not go right. He survived but just barely. This one sounded way too close to home; many of his not so good thinking I have self-talked many times.
I hope you pick up this issue (it is well worth the subscription price) or if you cannot find it I would be glad to "lend" out my copy
