« on: July 17, 2010, 11:43:07 PM »
Well now that I've got your attention...    (yes it is included...)

Low water OBJ run in Crested Butte... fun times... let get the feedback rolling!  tired of crickets  :?  just a warning though... this one is one for JK so it's just me... and shameless self promotion to pay the bills   filmed by me (with a GoPro) and by Sam and our friend Josh Oberleas with a GoPro on a broke paddle (an AT by the way... hmmm)

excellent footage and beautiful country, guys! if your whole trip out west was like that, it appears to have been a great one...well, except for the nose thing...

Beautiful run and nice video. Not sure if that run would have have broke me and then some or what level it is but it sure looks fun. Gotta keep working on my boofing I suppose. Never really could figure out exactly what happened in that last rowdy bit(Only one view of that part)? The part where you "got greedy" and broke your nose? Did you land too flat and forward from too high of a drop/headbutt the boat?

Kevin, It looks like he aired it out a little too much(good ole Villain) and brought his paddle back across from his right boof stroke too early and just caught it wrong on impact. Paddle hit boat at landing and then nose met paddle.

Just what it looks like to me..those things happen when you're airing out big drops like that; but it's OBJ! Why not???

EDIT: Just a skateboard accident..

  lol yeah...

edited to add: LMAO... some skateboard accidents are more intelligent than others... but I've seen some bad ones! lol

I got greedy with a huge boof (25+ ft)... First time running it of the trip.  Things were a bit on the low end of good so the pool was pretty green (not a good thing for waterfalls)...  the Villain boofs big and I wasn't in it enough on waterfalls beforehand to know that it airs out big.... it just flies up flat when it catches air.  So first day I got greedy and instead of pencilling in first (the safe way to land anything over 15'), I tried to boof a bit and then land at 45 degrees... which acts like a boof but scoops the momentum (smoother energy transfer)...  it just feels cooler and looks cooler and I wanted it... just didn't factor in the new boat and the fact that I hadn't practiced on waterfalls with it much like I had in the Hero and Rocker.

The Villain aired up on me big and flew me into the green flat and with an explosion of energy and no where to go, my head smashed into my boat on landing and my paddle was sandwiched between my boat and my nose...  something had to give so it was my nose... all hit at once.  My forehead took a big hit on my deck too. Had I been actually in a full tuck I would have been protected regardless of the mistake... But I used to boof that drop ALL the time like that and never had an issue... but the Villain is longer than the Rocker and flies out more and lands with more surface area AND things were a tad low... so the math adds up...

So the bottom line is that I landed too flat for that level...  you can never land too forward though... if anything, I wasn't forward enough with my head turned to the side and in a full tuck.

Here's a pic of the drop:

Got into The Devil's Punch Bowls on the South Fork of the Crystal between Crested Butte and Marble, CO... via Schofield Pass... put the Villain to good use on some waterfalls and had fun filming it... check it out!

Special thanks to Neal, Dalton, Samantha, and Bryant for helping me out with this little mission... and for taking video/photos.

How far did you guys end up having to hike when you came over the pass Boyd?  When we were in there last summer (we came in from the other side after a day or two on the North Fork) I walked up a little ways on the road past the Punchbowls and looked at that road to Schofield.  Skeeeeetchy to say the least.  We heard stories of the ATV'ers that rolled off the road up there near the pass and died years ago.

Glad you had some good lines.  They are a gorgeous pair of drops.  Good job turning that head off the first one too to protect the nose.

from where we parked it was about a mile or so... maybe a mile and a half... the catch is getting around or over the snow.  We got shut down on the first attempt with an avalanche path over the road and snow plug left over that crossed the road...  when we finally went back there were ruts in the snow on the hard part so we went for it (not on the video)...

Did you hike to the punchbowls from the North Fork?  Just curious how far that would be...  doesn't seem that much farther on a map

Believe it or not we DROVE all the way up.  Right up to the little bridge just there at the Punchbowls.  Adam's truck and one other.  To hike would have been quite a few miles.  Needless to say driving around in the Crystal Valley is not recommended without really good clearance and even then its sketchy as all get out without 4x4 in spots.  Hands down the most intense moments of our CO trip last year.  Well that and Big South but that was a different type of intense.  Glad you guys gotchewsum.  Its a place def. worth working for.

Great vid Boyd...I can't miss next year's trip.  I'll try to do without the nose-breaking stuff.

And, sorry mister howard about not getting my GoPro footage up.  I have an 8 y/o crappy laptop with barely 512mb SDRAM and no graphics card.  Editing 1080p is a bit of a challenge!
