Me and road biking
« on: July 27, 2010, 04:41:52 PM »
It seems that there must be a GPS locator on me because I seem to be found by the crazies. A couple of weeks ago I decided I would give road biking in Memphis another chance after 20 years of giving it up because of the crazies out there then; (and I continue to have left leg problems while running). I got out my 27 year old bike, excellent bike for 1983; steel frame and center pull brakes and shifters on the down tube. Looks terrible since I stopped riding the roads while I was repainting and only the primer is on it. Put new tubes in tires did a minor tuneup and started riding on the roads. Geez!! I am slow as all get out. But it was fun and enjoyable. Yesterday morning I was riding to my stair climbing workout; on back streets. About 100 yds. down the road I see this pickup on the side of the road with a bunch of lawn mowers. The guy is backing one of the larger lawn mower off the truck,  I tell myself be careful. By the time I get to him he is off the truck and turning the lawn mower right out into the road where I was without even so much as a glance over his shoulder. I am trying get out of his way and not be run over by a lawn mower. I missed him  by no more than a few inches; I am yelling at him to watch what he is doing. Of course I am in the wrong because "Roads are not for bikes but for cars!"
I still think I am going to buy a new road bike but riding on the roads does not seem to have gotten any safer in last 20 years.
Peace vincent /shamen

because of the crazies out there

1st rule of running and biking in Memphis...you have to be crazier than them.
